Progressive Era Individual Research

My Topic: Urban Housing

1 key person: Jacob Riis, 1 key term: Tenement Act of 1901
HOW MUCH PROGRESS WAS MADE DURING THE PROGRESSIVE ERA?

What were the problems? What was done about them? How much change occurred?

You will be researching one of the topics below. For your topic you will:

· Conduct internet research and create 2-column notes to acquire information about your topic from at least 3 different sites. Keep track of the sites that you use.
· Find at least 2 images that relate to your topic and analyze them (can be a picture or a cartoon).
· Find at least 1 primary source (can be a piece of writing, a speech, a newspaper article, etc) that relates to your topic and analyze it, including analysis of POV.
· A list of (at least 5) key vocabulary terms for your topic – listed and defined in your words.
· A 2-3 paragraph summary of your topic, especially focused on the results – what was changed by the progressives? What stayed the same? Also include connections to today – what progress has been made up to this time?
· A Glog to put it all together in an impressive presentation.

Notes on Urban housing during the P-Era:

Key Terms:
  1. Tenement Act of 1901-the first official law to ban the construction of poor tenements into a safer living place
  2. Urbanization-people moving from rural to urban areas
  3. Muckrakers-reformers who address and state the problems to others
  4. Jacob Riis- a muckraker that wanted and helped the poor lower class so that they can have better living conditions and a chance to improve their lives
  5. Tenements- a run-down often overcrowded apartment house in the poor section of a large city, it was usually poorly constructed and dangerous

external image BE036593.jpg
Analysis:
About 8 people/men sleeping in one room that is not even big enough for 2, cramped up on the hard floor that they can't even fully lay their wholes bodies on. Along with bad working conditons, they had to live in this beat up apartment.

Analysis:
men standing outside of tenement buldings, maybe some violence is about to go on

What is a primary source?

a primary source is original materials from the time period involved. they can be letters, poems, records, and other documents created during the time period.

Primary source APPARTS chart

PERSPECTIVE, BIAS, & POV

Perspective- a view or outlook on ones ideas, POV; How you see something
Bias- prejudice; how you are likely to see things based on who your are and things that you have been through; in favor of one side than the other
POV- Point of view; How view or see a situation and its affected by Biases

My primary source came from Jacob Riis:

Jabob Riis was into helping the lower class have more opportunity to improve their lives and living conditions because he had the chance to do so. He came from being in a lower class category and was an immigrant to a middle class category. He sympathized the lower class immigrants.
Jacob Riis also didnt like the fact that the people(gov't) blamed the immigrants/tenants about how it was their fault that the tenements were filthy and unhealthy. He thought that the peoples(gov't) habits were evil and they had to be held responsible.

An American today would probably blame the tenants because they are the ones living there and they should keep it clean. But the gov't should have made an effort to keep the places safe to live and with lighting.

What is a Blog?

A blog is an internet site where someone can give their comments and explain their prospective on things.

Examples:

Perez Hilton Blog
- This is a blog site by Perez Hilton, this reality tv star. It's basically celebrity gossip. He tells you what he thinks about a celebrity, good or bad things. on the blog site there are some games, videos, pictures, etc.. Perez Hilton's perspective on people and other things vary. He maight say he likes someone one day, But when that person does something he all of a sudden doesnt like them. He is always being judged by people because of his sexual orientation, So I think that is the real reson why he does it to other people, eventhough their feelings might be hurt from what he had said. Once you write something on the internet, it can never be erased because you wont know who has seen it before.
Teen Diary blog
- This is a blog site for teens only (13-22), mostly because it's like a guide for teens girls on how to survive in this world, like they stated in the blog, "The ultimate life guide for young urban women". In this site that was designed by Websignia. They give you the opportunity to seek advice from others, it talks about certain videos, news, new women celebs, and talks about teen issues, etc.. Their perspectives on teen girls/women are that we need a place where we are not afraid to ask questions and havesome sympathy towards other girls. They want you to know that there are people who want to listen to our thoughts and troubles. The real person behind probably didnt have the opportunity to live their life they way that they wanted to, so that is why they are convinced to help out others.
